Why this example is worth doing
The characteristic table answers what the flip-flop does; the excitation table answers what inputs to apply to get a required transition, which is the direction sequential design actually runs. Its cells are full of don't-cares, and those don't-cares are what make JK-based state machines cheaper than D-based ones — they feed straight into the K-maps for the input equations.
